Our local physicians support the rural community of Dawson City and surrounding areas, including rural clinic practice, on-call ER obligations, hospital in-patient care, and the occasional home visit and helicopter medevac. We currently staff four physicians in the winter and, due to a large influx of locals and tourists in the summer, five physicians in the summer.
work duties
Clinic runs Monday through Friday 9-5. ER call shifts are 24 hours, which include seeing walk-in patients in the clinic during the weekday in addition to home-call for ER outside of regular work hours. ER call is on average 1-in-4.5.
Physician Certifications
Locums should be comfortable working in a rural, remote ER. Candidates require currentcertification in the following courses:
Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
There are no scheduled deliveries in Dawson, but the occasional unplanned birth does occur. Ideal candidates have the following certification in anticipation of the occasional delivery in the community:
Advances in Labour and Risk Management (ALARM)/Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO)
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
Physicians must apply for a Yukon medical licence. Physicians with a full licence in another province/territory in Canada should have no issues with this application.
Remuneration
Physicians are contracted to Yukon Insured Health Services at a very generous daily rate, in addition to after hours fee-for-service payments that are some of the most competitive in the country. Resident physicians are also eligible for Yukon Medical Association recruitment and benefit funds. Contact us for more information!

There are ample opportunities for careers in Dawson, and many of our physicians’ partners have found their calling in our humble town. Job opportunities are best if your partner is a teacher, mechanic, carpenter, electrician, plumber, nurse, counsellor, entrepreneur, is able to work from remotely/from home or has skills as an office worker or in the service industry.
There are lots of activities for kids including preschoolers. The local school runs from kindergarten to Grade 12 and has a community library within it. Dawson City is also home to the local campus of Yukon University, the Yukon School of Visual Arts and the Klondike Institute of Arts and Culture.
